Mondaine Wall Clock Large 40cm
A version of the Large Mondaine Wall Clock is featured in over 3,000 Railway Stations throughout Switzerland. Its sheer simplicity and elegance make it easy to tell the time in a rushed glance. Author Werner Huber has claimed the Swiss Railways Clock to be one of Switzerland's three great traditions - along with the Alps and direct democracy.
There's a small but telling detail on this Wall Clock : It has a continuous sweep hand, meaning the little red second hand moves without interruption rather than clicking from second to second. The Automatic wrist watch is the only other item in the Mondaine product that does this.
Some history : Revered engineer Hans Hilfiker was enlisted by Swiss Federal Railways in 1944. They wanted a wall clock that could be easily, quickly and accurately read on the railway stations of Switzerland. Tourists had difficulties adapting to a country where the trains ran precisely on time.
Hilfiker's design was met with acclaim - right down to the famous red second hand, inspired by the red paddle waved by the station master at departure time. To this day, any authentic Mondaine clock (as well as each wristwatch) comes with the SBB inscription to signify its status as the official Swiss railways clock.
Mondaine's 40cm Wall Clock (A994.CLOCK.16SBB) is the largest in their range. It has a satin aluminium finish, quartz movement, and two year warranty.
