Abalone is an elegant Mensa awarded board game sometimes described as 'Sumo wrestling for Marbles. It's also remarkable as a game in which tournament referees penalize stodgy and overly defensive play.
The aim of Abalone (pron Abba-lone) is to manipulate your marbles into a row where they outnumber your opponents' – and then push them off the board by moving any line of one to three marbles of your marbles by one space. Winner is the first to push six of the opponent's fourteen marbles off the board. With the board in front of you, learning the rules takes just a minute. Honest.
The Abalone Board Game was invented by two Frenchmen in 1987. It's subsequently sold four million copies. It's wonderful for exercising logic, maths and reasoning skills.
