The Newson 20 Piece Dinner set is in beautifully glazed pure white bone china. It's nicely thin whilst still standing up to Qantas commercial use. Because of its aviation genesis, each piece is designed with a profile and lip to make it harder for things to slip, slide or spill – making for much more relaxed dining. These cups are marvellous. Their shape is based on the design for mugs used on ships' bridges – they're broader at the base to make them harder to knock over or spill. There's also a unique interior anti spill rebate. No more tea or coffee slops in the saucer. Unusually for cups, Mr Newson's stack neatly.
Mark Newson is one of the Australia's most revered international product designers. He's designed Smeg cooktops, Alessi Pepper mills, and tow-in surfboards. He's the only Australian designer in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Newson was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, 2005.
Noritake of Japan has been making beautiful dinnerware for a century. Your mum probably got a set for a wedding present. It just wasn't as beautifully practical as this.
