Tala Pie Bird
The Tala Ceramic Pie Bird is a hollow vent or funnel which lets air escape from pies as they bake. It's placed in the centre of the bottom pastry layer to hold the crust up, prevent soggy pastry, and stop fillings from over flowing.
The Tala Pie Bird is part of a lovely history : The use of pastry funnels began around the 1700s, whilst ceramic pie birds specifically became popular around the 1940s – it's believed inspired by the children's rhyme "Four and twenty Blackbirds baked in a pie…"
The Tala Cookware company is part of that history. They're a British company which dates from 1899. Nowadays they manufacture worldwide, but their cute pie black bird is modelled on a very famous pie bird from the defunct Artone Pottery company of Staffordshire, U.K
Nowadays there is a growing worldwide number of Pie Bird collectors, and they even have their own annual convention – in Paris, Tennessee, USA. For folk who just love a pie, the Tala Pie Bird makes for a really good pie without the airfare.
