Helle Steinbit Fishing Knife
The Helle Steinbit Fishing and Filleting Knife is a knife of supreme quality handmade in Norway – a country where fishing and knives really matter. It's perfect for filleting freshly caught fish, and is a beautiful tool to last a lifetime. And to be passed to future generations.
The Helle company was founded by brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle on their childhood farm in Holmeland, Norway in 1932. Whilst production has moved to Holmedal in Norway, the commitment to quality and function in nature continues. They continue to spurn automated production, and up to forty five manual steps can be involved in producing a single knife.
Their Steinbit Fishing Knife has a flexible blade made from sandvik stainless steel (12C27). It's triple laminated, in a process unique to Helle. The handle is fashioned from sustainable curly birch wood, whilst the sheath is in leather engraved with Helle's longship logo atop a string of fish.
The Steinbit's designer, Espen Thorup is one of Norway's legendary designers of yachts and boats. His Fishing Knife is the result of a longtime hobbyist passion for fishing. He designed it in 1990 and, appropriately, the Norwegian name Steinbit translates in English to catfish. It also works superbly with herring, taylor, bream, skipjack… and bigger (good luck !).
