Mondaine 38mm Evo Black Strap

Mondaine 38mm Evo is the watchface which is next size up from the Mondaine in the Permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York – after all, many of us are bigger than our parents. It's appropriate too because the famed Mondaine Evo is itself a contemporary update of the original Mondaines from all those years ago.

This is indeed one of the world's great watch designs. It's otherwise known as the Swiss railway Watch. It's not fussy, it just tells the time very clearly and simply, and without the aid of numerals.

The creation dates from 1944 when the revered Hans Hilfiker designed the Swiss Railway Clock for ease of reading on the railway stations of Switzerland. The famous red second hand was inspired by the paddle waved by the train guard at departure time. The Railway Clock became the most famous wall clock in the world. The Mondaine Watch Company adapted Hilfiker's famous wall clock design to the more portable wristwatch form in 1986.

Years later, this watchface gained even greater attention when Apple used the famous face without permission in the Apple iPhone5.
