Smith's Rosebud Salve
Smith’s Rosebud Salve is the enduring and uncomplicated multi-purpose skin balm. Old but good. A classic - famed for its success and adaptability for lip gloss, skin blemishes, insect bites, cuts, burns, scarring… and nappy rash.
The Rosebud Perfume Co. was founded in 1895, but now its Rosebud Salve is seen everywhere from Gwyneth Paltrow’s handbag to backstage at Victoria’s Secret Parades.
Dr George F. Smith was originally a schoolteacher. He retrained as a pharmacist and opened a shop on the main street of Woodsboro, Maryland *
In 1902, after friends and family requested a salve for minor skin irritations, Dr Smith sourced essential oils and botanicals from Grasse, France – centre of the world’s perfume industry, and home to the International Perfume Museum. He concocted a “balsam of rosebuds” which he enthusiastically labelled as “a miracle in a tin”.
His salve was soon adopted by professional make-up artists on Broadway and stages beyond. California’s burgeoning film industry further fanned its fame. 21st century bloggers then picked up the vibe.
Contemporary Bloggers seem to agree that Smith’s Rosebud Salve is great for giving shine to lips, taming eyebrows, and heightening cheekbones (if applied in a C-shaped arc along the cheekbones to below the edge of the brow-line).
Rosebud Perfume Co. is now run by Dr G.M. Smith’s great grandchildren. Their salves are still made in the USA. The famous little tin that’s used today is unchanged since 1962.
Smith’s Rosebud Salve is vegan. It contains natural oils, cotton seed oil, and white surgical grade petroleum. Importantly, it has NO parabens. Each tin holds 22 grams, and the balm lasts up to three years.

* His shop has now been re-created - it was one of the first in the USA to have a Coca Cola fountain. Dr Smith was the town’s first mayor, supported the town band, headed the cemetary board, and had a huge car collection (for heaps of great bio stuff from his grandson see http://www.mtnlaurel.com/articles/1924-the-rosebud-perfume-company.html).
