Grant McLellan of the Go-Betweens wrote "Cattle & Cane" whilst sipping from a cup of Earl Grey Tea. Star Trek's Captain Picard was another fan to need a cup of Earl Grey to bring some genteel grace to life in the fast lane.
The tea is actually named after an Earl Grey, the English PM who abolished slavery in the British Empire in the 1830s. For all that he's better remembered for his tea than his social justice breakthroughs.
Earl Grey Tea is a tad surprising because it's just normal plain black tea infused with extract of the bergamot orange of southern Italy. It's the bergamot which gives the tea it's unique citrus aroma. Because bergamot is capable of masking very ordinary black teas, some tea snobs get a tad hissy about Earl Grey. Too bad.
