Barrel of Monkeys is the genuine retro article. As developed in 1965, and made by Milton Bradley. There are twelve monkeys in each multi-purpose plastic barrel. It doubles as monkey lair for pulling monkeys out of one by one in a chain. It's also a handy carry case.
