Quoridor board game is one of the world's most awarded and elegant games. Not only is it stimulating to play, but it also looks fine on coffee tables between turns.
The game is for 2-4 players (although two works best) and is suitable for six year olds and over. There's a 28cm square board, four different coloured pawns, and twenty fences...all in very flash varnished wood. On each turn a player may either move their pawn, or block their opponent with a fence. Opponents start on opposite sides, and first to the other side wins. Most games take around 15 minutes.
Quoridor comes from the mighty French company Gigamic. Not only do they dedicate themselves to 'elegant games', but refreshingly aver on their website that "status is not measured by the number of TV commercials which endorse your game." Perhaps it should be measured by the number of international awards reaped.
