Dala Horse Woodcarving Kit is a loving nod to the timeless art of whittling, and the famed Swedish Dala Horses that woodcarvers made for children. They’re thought to date from the 1700s.
They became internationally famous as a symbol of Sweden when a giant Dala horse was displayed at the entrance to the Swedish pavilion at the 1939 World Exhibition in New York.
All material here is made by the famed Morakniv (Mora knife) company in Sweden – they have a Swedish Royal Warrant, along with the likes of Kanken Backpacksd, Kosta Boda Glassware, and Saab automobiles.
The knife in this kit is as used by craftsmen in the village of Nusnäs for ages – a traditional woodcarving knife, with a spindle shaped handle of natural birch wood and a laminated carbon steel blade. Carbon steel is the choice of carving purists because it grinds to a sharper edge (a word to novices : wipe dry after use).
The horse’s wood is authentic Scandinavian pine. The scabbard is a heavy duty plastic to avoid self harm
Dala Horse Carving Kit comes with an instructional booklet and is a beautiful and culturally significant doorway to an ancient craft.
