Kanken Backpack by Fjallraven is a famously functional urban backpack. It’s very light, very tough, mightily square, unisex, and the only backpack with a Swedish Royal Warrant.
Kanken backpacks are even officially recognised as “pieces of applied art for their design and distinctive form identity” (Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts, June 2017).
It also has unique criss-crossed strapping to keep weight high up, close to the body, and comfortable.
Kanken has been the Swedish people’s bag since 1978. Ingmar Bergman’s grandkids, Volvo workers, Bjorn Borg, and members of The Cardigans have all probably used a Kanken.
It was invented by former Boy Scout Ake Nordin in collaboration with Sweden’s Guide & Scout Association. The original Kanken is unchanged since 1978, whilst its reputation as a utilitarian icon has grown with every year.
Ake Nordin’s intention was for Kanken to replace the spine-damaging heavy leather messenger bags used by Swedish students. As such, the Kanken was sized and shaped to carry two A4 Lever Arch files. It succeeded beyond his wildest hopes. Kanken Backpack is simple … and deceptively sophisticated :
For all it’s simplicity, a Kanken does have one famously unique feature – there’s a removeable internal pad that can be taken out and used to sit on (at sporting and music events, for exampe) for a bit of bonus comfort. Between times it stops contents from pessing annoyingly against backs.
• main compartment opens completely with heavy duty double zippers that don’t break
• two side pockets for 500ml bottles, magazines etc
• Vinylon F fabric is water repellant and dirt resistant
• a zipped front pocket secures smaller things
• unique interior seat pad can also pillow a 13” laptop.
– Machine washable (gently)
Kanken backpacks are named for the Swedish word for “carry”. Ake Nordin named his company Fjallraven after the Swedish Arctic Fox – as featured on the reflectorized logo on every Kanken backpack. Arctic Foxes are endangered, and part profits of every Kanken sale go towards species preservation. Ake Nordin passed away in 2013, but his company continues under the guidance of his son. And the famed Kankens carry on …in lots of colours.
