The Mondaine 35mm wrist watch is one of the world’s great watch designs. It’s otherwise known as the Swiss railway Watch. It’s not fussy, it just tells the time very clearly and simply, and without the aid of numerals.
A red strap on a Mondaine isn’t just a groovy look – it has meaning because it matches the famed red Mondaine sweep second hand – inspired by the paddle waved by Swiss train guards at departure time.
Mondaine’s creation dates from 1944 when the revered Hans Hilfiker designed the Swiss Railway Clock for ease of reading on the railway stations of Switzerland. The Railway Clock became the most famous wall clock in the world.
Years later, this watchface gained even greater attention when Apple used the famous face without permission in the Apple iPhone5.
The Mondaine Watch Company adapted Hilfiker’s famous wall clock design to the more portable wristwatch form in 1986.
Evo2 35mm wrist watch is part of Mondaine’s 2017 update of their 1986 original. It has a refined case, lugs, crown, caseback, and sapphire glass (rather than regular hardened mineral glass) so that it’s more scratch resistant.
