The Ah-So Cork Puller or Cork Extractor is the best way to get an old or fragile cork from a bottle of wine (or aged Port). It’s also one of the few extractors that lets you put the cork back in the bottle. The Ah-So wine opener is one of the most imitated products on the planet.
The Monopol Ah-So cork extractor is the original. It’s made in West Germany with a satin stainless steel sheath over a T-shaped oval handle and two flexible prongs of unequal length. There’s no helix shaped screw, and it’s near indestructible.
The Ah-So works by lining its two prongs up between the cork and the bottle… and then twisting. It’s unique because it’s not puncturing the cork, so there’s less chance of cork bits ending up in the bottle. Likewise, because it’s opening the bottle by constricting the cork, there’s more chance of getting the cork back in.
The Monopol Company has been manufacturing wine and kitchen products since the mid-20th century. Their ten staff make these in the town of Wittelsberg, West Germany.
It’s the German origins which are purported to provide the name “Ah-So” – coming from the frequent German exclamation of “Ach-So” (Oh-I see) when the penny (or pfennig ?) dropped about how it worked.
