Port Pipes or Port Sippers are for drinking liquers, dessert wine or port. They were very groovy in the seventies. They’re now officially back !
The use of Port Pipes dates back to Germany in the 1600s where the burghers used ceramic versions to drink their schnapps. In the pipe smoking culture of that time, they no doubt enjoyed holding something that felt like a pipe.
An argument in favour of Port Pipes is that sipping from the glass bottom ensures drinking alcohol that hasn’t oxidized. With spirits, the shape of the Port Sipper ensures that the hand warms it in a favourable way.
Most people who used them in the 1970s just thought they were funky.
