Sophie Conran Ergo Hoe is a brilliant tool for getting rid of weeds and stirring up soils. The blade is sharp on the inside, and it works by drawing the tool towards yourself – preventing wear and tear on gardeners, and avoiding slicing through plant stems.
This is manufactured by Sheffield gardening tool maestros Burgon & Ball. It’s a deluxe item – stainless steel blade, solid brass ferrule, and a beech wood handle.
The Ergo Hoe is a wonderful gift, because most home gardeners don’t have anything quite like it. Once used, they’ll wonder how they did without it.
Designer Sophie Conran is a household name in England – her father is design legend Sir Terrence Conran, and her brother is celebrated product designer Jasper Conran. Sophie was a retailer, then interior designer, and subsequent designer of tablewear. We love that, as a cookbook author, her first book was about Pies.
Through it all however, it seems Sophie had an abiding love of gardening. Her tools are immaculately practical and feminine without being condescending.
Maybe that’s why they were shortlisted for Product of The Year, Chelsea Flower Show 2011
